Certainly, curing diseases is harder than getting piercings in weird places, but the two aren’t mutually exclusive. You have to cultivate your mind for it to stand a chance in the face of society’s melting pot in order to achieve great things (and if you don’t achieve those, you’ll still be happier, and very much more alive on the inside.) Make art, write on walls, wear a funny hat, get a PhD, solve a Millennium Prize Problem, get the tattoo to celebrate it. Encourage and enable others to do the same. Spend more time standing out and worry less about fitting in.

Volatile Software / Steve Losh

Volatile Software / Steve Losh:
(via Instapaper)

Misogyny

Misogyny:
(via Instapaper)

My political leanings, via The Political Compass...

My political leanings, via The Political Compass test.

They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are ‘The Advertisers’ and they are laughing at you.

You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.

Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.

You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.
”

- Banksy

Scrabble Typography Edition

Scrabble Typography Edition

"Only the sequence of the words must remain inviolate. We can change everything about a text but the words themselves and the order they appear in. The literary experience does not lie in any one moment of perception, or any physical contact with a material object (even less in the “possession” of handsome masterpieces lined up on our bookshelves), but in the movement of the mind through a sequence of words from beginning to end. More than any other art form it is pure mental material, as close as one can get to thought itself.”

- Tim Parks, E-books Can’t Burn

Photo

"Freedom to write, freedom to read, freedom to own material that you believe is worth defending means..."

“Freedom to write, freedom to read, freedom to own material that you believe is worth defending means you’re going to have to stand up for stuff you don’t believe is worth defending, even stuff you find actively distasteful, because laws are big blunt instruments that do not differentiate between what you like and what you don’t, because prosecutors are humans and bear grudges and fight for re-election, because one person’s obscenity is another person’s art.”

- Neil Gaiman — Why defend freedom of icky speech?

"Remember to never split an infinitive.

The passive voice should never be used.

Do not put statements in the negative form.

Verbs have to agree with their subjects.

Proofread carefully to see if you words out.

If you reread your work, you can find on rereading a great deal of repetition can be by rereading and editing.

A writer must not shift your point of view.

And don’t start a sentence with a conjunction. (Remember, too, a preposition is a terrible word to end a sentence with.)

Don’t overuse exclamation marks!!

Place pronouns as close as possible, especially in long sentences, as of 10 or more words, to their antecedents.

Writing carefully, dangling participles must be avoided.

If any word is improper at the end of a sentence, a linking verb is.

Take the bull by the hand and avoid mixing metaphors.

Avoid trendy locutions that sound flaky.

Everyone should be careful to use a singular pronoun with singular nouns in their writing.

Always pick on the correct idiom.

The adverb always follows the verb.

Last but not least, avoid cliches like the plague; seek viable alternatives.
