I know the Web is giving a voice to everyone. I know we’re (as a net-total) happy in this revolution of ours, petitioning and arguing and creating and consuming on the Internet.
But comments have this unpleasant way of degenerating the conversation. They don’t enable discussion so much as allow heckling. It’s the web equivalent of shouting from the crowd. Writing your own blog post in response to someone else’s requires a little more thoughtfulness, a little more patience. Your flow of ideas can be better structured, and you invite your own followers to engage in the conversation (in their own blogs) by exposing them to the matters that interest you. Ideas propagate better, and a more intellectually stimulating conversation can take place.
